New hires can take training to fill the gaps in their skill set. But what about the gaps in their personality? There are no certifications for being a good co-worker or teammate. Finding the right fit can be tough, and trial-and-error is inefficient. What someone does with their free time can help indicate if a potential hire is going to be a good fit with the existing team. Here’s what I like to do outside business hours:

Pastimes

Off Roading

2 years ago, this would have said hiking. With the surge in popularity the local trails have had since COVID19 has restricted travel, getting away from it all has become a tall order. Looking to see more of this country and less of it’s residents pushed me to start the hobby. Within a few instagram posts, I helped form a wheeling group that now spends it’s weekends looking for that perfect secret spot. It’s a fantastic community to be apart of, and a ton of fun! My vehicle’s instagram page (@twiggythetoyota) has gained almost 3000 followers!

The Boys

My dogs are a constant source of motivation to get outside and active. My pug Opie, and my blind rescue Shepard-Husky John love getting out there. They join me when I go offroading, visit new parks in the city, or head to the pub for a pint (when pups are welcomed). These two make and incredible team, and they help put the jump in my step every day. A lot of what I do in my spare time is influenced by them, as they love a good time.

Smart Home

My wife and I purchased our first home in 2018, and while it comes with challenges, I love the place. To bring it up to modern standards (and to give myself a challenging project) I decided to completely outfit the property with smart devices and networking that makes our lives easier and less wasteful. This is not yet a fully hashed out area of consumer electronics, and I really enjoyed learning about how it all works, home electrical, all the devices available, and all the tricks to keeping your smart home happy.
